Propagating Hymenocallis caroliniana - Carolina Spider Lily

by Mike Strickland

Collect the seeds in September through October. Plant seeds about 1/2 inch deep in potting soil, using pots no smaller than 3 inches. Leave the pots outside. Roots should form over the winter and one or more leaves should appear in spring.

Bulb will pull to the bottom of the pot with contractile roots. You can repot every 6 months or plant in the ground. If kept in pots, make sure that soil is not too wet as bulbs will rot.

You should expect blooms in 3 to 4 years.
